Book Review: “Essentials for Life”
Marcia Ford’s devotional book was a great and helpful read. Essentials for Life is a collection of short chapters–each about four pages–on a variety of subjects that Ford considers spiritual “essentials.” Subtitled Your Back-to-Basics Guide to What Matters Most, the book is intended to be a book that helps the reader find and begin to study an area that needs to be addressed.
One of the best parts about the book is that it is filled with helpful quotes, lists, and, of course, Scriptures relating to each topic. If you like quotes, you will find a wealth of them in this volume. Each chapter also ends with a list of 2 “Do’s” and 2 “Don’ts” to help you as you seek to apply that chapter’s topic.
The topics cover a great variety of areas, from Bible study to holiness to gratitude. I was impressed with how “even” the book was. With so many different topics, it would be easy to see some deeper chapters and some that are weaker. Ford does an excellent job, though, of making each chapter about the same level of reading and depth.
Admittedly, I didn’t agree with every word in the book, but for a devotional book, it was very helpful. It was a fairly easy read, but did provide me with plenty of challenges.
