A Prayer On Inauguration Day

Father,

Thank you for this day. Thank you that, in this country, today is possible. Thank you that we do not change leaders by military coup or only at the death of a leader, but through a peaceful changeover. Thank you that my children can see that happen, and I pray it will be true for a long time to come.

On this day, I thank you for the service of our outgoing President. While divisive in many ways, I’m thankful for his willingness to lead and to serve. Help President Trump to find joy in going back to private life. Help his family to be more peaceful without the stresses of being the “first family.” Though I don’t agree with all he has done in office, I thank you for all who are willing to take on the pressure and stress of being in the Oval Office, so thank you for him.

And Father, thank you for the willingness of Joe Biden to go into that office and work. Help him to see that what he does will have a huge impact on our nation well beyond “today,” and help him feel the weight of responsibility that comes with that realization. Bless him with good health and clear thinking throughout his time in office so that he can lead well.

Our nation is so divided, and we ask you to help all of us see the pageantry of this day as something that unites us. I may not agree with all Donald Trump did and I may not agree with all that Joe Biden will do, but, Father, thank you that we are able to see this day and be reminded that we live in a nation that can come together to celebrate such wonderful things as a peaceful transfer of power. And we do pray it will be peaceful. Help me not to be divisive, but to be a faithful citizen of Your kingdom first, which includes being a faithful citizen of this country. Help those who are overjoyed by this day to be happy, but not to gloat. Help those who are furious at this day to be upset, but not divisive. Help us all to remember the fruit of the Spirit and to live it out, even in our politics.

Bless this nation on this day and all days and, again, bless the men who are transferring power today. For them, and for this country, I am grateful.

In Jesus’s name,

Amen.
