34 Years and 40 Million Lives Ago

Has it really been that long?

On January 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court made the landmark decision in the case of Roe vs. Wade. That’s 34 years ago. That’s longer than Alexander the Great lived. That’s longer than Jesus Christ lived here on the earth. Compared to our nation’s history, it is a significant percentage of time. 34 years represents about 15% of our nation’s history.

And, in that time, over 40million children have been legally killed. You’ve heard all the statistics before. That unthinkably large number represents more lives than every war ever fought in our nation–combined. In fact, it represents multiple times all the war casualties combined.

Even more sadly, our numbers in America are just part of the story. A website called “Abortion No” reports these worldwide numbers:

  • Number of abortions per year: approximately 46million
  • Number of abortions per day: approximately 126,000
  • About 26 million women obtain legal abortions each year, while an additional 20 million abortions are obtained in countries where it is restricted or prohibited by law.
  • Worldwide, the lifetime average is about 1 abortion per woman.

Did you catch that last statistic? When averaged out, every woman on earth has had an abortion. Obviously, that is not true. Millions have never had one, but huge numbers have had 2, 3 or more, and that brings the average to one per every woman on earth!

The disdain for human life begins with a disdain for life in the womb. On this most somber of anniversaries, Christians must continue to stand for what is right. We must continue to preach that life begins at conception. We must continue to teach that every life, even in womb, is valuable. We must continue to preach that every one–even the unborn–has a soul.

And, if you are blessed like I am, to have a precious little one (born AND unborn), be thankful. Every time I see a story or read a statistic about abortion, a tear comes to my eye. Leah and I are thankful daily that Mary Carol had a mother who knew it wasn’t right, and who wanted to give this little one a chance.

Say a prayer that abortions will stop. Abortion is a terrible stain on our culture, and it deprives children of their most basic rights: to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
