A Different Mindset

Yesterday morning, I awoke in our hotel room and got ready for worship as usual. Leah and the kids did the same. While we were not at “home,” it was a typical Sunday morning.

After getting dressed, we headed down to the breakfast area. It was about 7:50 AM, and the room was packed. We sat at the only table we could find and I had to sit on the arm of a couch, because the table was only really made for two people.

As I walked around getting food and as I listened, it was obvious that we were the exceptions to the rule in this room. While “dress” isn’t necessarily an indicator, it seemed fairly clear to me that we were the only ones in the room in our “Sunday best.” Also, I heard conversations about “getting to such-and-such” by lunch.

Of course, just a few minutes later, we went to worship and Bible classes. When those services were completed, we drove to a restaurant. On the way, we passed a large mall. As you might guess, I could not see an empty parking space. The time? 11:15 on Sunday morning.

This all happened in the Bible Belt! The Lord’s Day is just “another day” to many folks. It’s a day away from work, a day to relax and watch football, a day to read the paper with being disturbed. That’s a different mindset from the one a New Testament Christian should have.

The Lord’s Day can be a day to relax…at least some. But significant time should be spent with His people worshipping Him! It’s His day, after all. Let’s make sure our mindset different from that of the world. Let’s make sure Sunday is still special, because we give our devotion to our Father in a special way.

“You should not stay away from the church meetings, as some are doing.
But you should meet together and encourage each other”
(Hebrews 10:25, NCV)
