A Simple Solution for Racial Strife
Recently, I overheard a conversation. I promise I was not eavesdropping; the participants were speaking so loudly that I could hardly help hearing almost every word.
One participant was older, and was a man. As the conversation went on, he revealed that he was 80 years of age.
The other was somewhat younger, and was a woman. She told the man the year she was born, and it was in the 1960s, so she would be in her 50s; a full generation younger.
Oh…the man was white and the woman was African-American.
They talked about everything. (They made it rather difficult to read my book!) But, at one point my ears really perked up, because they got talking about “all this racial stuff” that’s going on in our country.
I was intrigued because neither one quoted from the news. No one shared a social media meme. They just talked about the hatred and anger and bitterness.
The woman then pretty much gave what would solve it all. Since she is an African-American, I wanted to hear her solution.
Interestingly, she didn’t name either Joe Biden or Donald Trump. She didn’t bring up either Vice-Presidential nominee, either. In fact, she didn’t name a political party at all. She didn’t talk about the neo-Nazis, Antifa, or Black Lives Matter. She didn’t mention anything she had seen on Facebook or Twitter, and she didn’t even quote a celebrity or star from the world of sports.
She admitted that she had struggled a few times in her life with racial issues, but then she gave the solution. Are you ready to write this down?
She said, “You know what I’ve learned? If I treat people the way I would like them to treat me, we do fine.”
Sound familiar?
Now, if we could just quit fanning the flames of anger and distrust and just follow the Golden Rule, we might have just such a pleasant conversation with people of every skin color and quit being upset and angry and fearful.
It’s almost as if Jesus knows what He is talking about.
