As You Have Believed

Today’s post is short, but I hope it hits you as hard as it hit me. In our Wednesday evening devotional, the speaker talked about the account from Matthew 8 where the centurion asks Jesus to heal his servant. When Jesus offers to go, the soldier shows both humility and great faith in his response.

What stood out to me was Jesus’s response in verse 13: “And to the centurion Jesus said, ‘Go; let it be done for you as you have believed.’ And the servant was healed at that very moment.”

As you have believed. What if the centurion hadn’t been sure? What if he thought Jesus could only help improve the servant’s condition a little?

This shouldn’t have taken me by surprise. After all, I know James 1:6 says, “But when you ask God, you must believe. Don’t doubt him. Whoever doubts is like a wave in the sea that is blown up and down by the wind” (ERV). For that matter, Matthew 21:22 says, “If you believe, you will get anything you ask for in prayer” (ERV).

I love the power of the Bible. One phrase hitting your heart at just the right time can remind you of truths that you know, but maybe have forgotten you know.

May I remember to pray believing so that God can answer “as I have believed.”
