Bible Heroes

When you think about the heroes in the Bible, who comes to your mind? Maybe you think of people like Moses or Joshua leading God’s people out of Egypt and into the promised land. Perhaps Daniel or his friends Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego come to the forefront of your mind because of their bravery in a foreign land. Maybe Esther or Ruth. Maybe you just turn to Hebrews 11 and read through that great “Hall of Faith.”

Sometime in the past, I made a note on my phone referencing 2 Corinthians 4 with this thought: God is the hero of every story–even ours–if we keep our eyes on Him. All of those heroes of faith I mentioned before, along with many others I could have mentioned, come to our minds because they kept their eyes on God. How far would Moses and Joshua have gotten if they hadn’t followed the true commander of the Lord’s army (Joshua 5:14-15)? Daniel’s friends were so fixed on God that they said even if He did not save them, they would not turn away from Him (Daniel 3:18) and Daniel himself was willing to go to the lions’ den if that’s what it took for turning toward God and talking to Him.

Read with me the following section of 2 Corinthians 4, verses 7-9: “But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed …”.

What does that have to do with God being the hero of our story? It really is simple if we will just accept what it says: the power is in Him, not me. I like to fix things and be seen as capable, but there are times and situations I can’t fix. I am sad. I despair over worries. I am confused over why something is happening the way it is. But, no matter what, I am not crushed, forsaken, destroyed … all because of God. He is my hero if I will just let Him be.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith …” Hebrews 12:1-2 (emphasis mine)
