Book Review: "Basic Christian Leadership"
Basic Christian Leadership is an easy read. It comprises just 114 pages, and several of those are used to quote the text from First Corinthians that serves as the basis for each chapter.
While the volume is simple to read, though, it is packed with helpful thoughts. First Corinthians 1-4 is filled with principles of leadership that Stott is able to pull out for us to learn. There are leadership ideas for preachers, elders, teachers and every member.
One major drawback in the book is the constant use of the pastor system. The New Testament is clear that elders (plural) are pastors for each congregation, but Stott emphasizes that there is a pastor (the preacher, singular) and that he “heads up” the congregation. While some of the principles that fall within these discussions are helpful, it can be difficult at times to get around the constant use of denominational language.
Overall, the book is very good and this “take” on the first four chapters of First Corinthians is unique. The book is a delightful read and a book you will enjoy.
