Book Review: "From Slaves to Conquerors"

This is the first book written by Barton Kizer, and he has done a tremendous job in putting this work together. This historical study takes young people through the books of Joshua, Judges, and Ruth, and helps them understand the historical process that led to the period of the kings.

Published by Riddle Creek, Kizer’s book continues the trend of Riddle Creek to produce Bible-based, practical material for teens. While this book is broad in its scope (really beginning with Moses, but focusing on three books of the Old Testament), it does not waver from its purpose in helping young people both see the “big picture” (the Bible timeline) and the practical.

Barton Kizer does a very good job in this book of using some of the major people in these books, as well as some of the lesser-knowns for reference. Also, by continually walking the student through the books, Kizer does well to help students see the continual “cycle” of good to bad through which the Israelites went.

As you can see from the title, From Slaves to Conquerors focuses on the victories the Israelites had in overtaking the Promised Land. Kizer is not afraid, however, to tell of some of the difficulties they suffered, and some they brought on themselves.

For a class of teenagers, teachers will find this book exciting and unique. Very few books walk through all three of these books and do so well. Students will find the illustrations to be practical and helpful.

For preachers, Kizer has obviously spent a lot of time preparing these lessons. You will find many helpful illustrations and even some sermon outlines.
