Book Review: "Old Light on New Worship"

Articles have been written trying to convince Christians to adapt and add musical instruments to worship. Many articles and books have been written trying to “hold the line,” seeking to keep Christians from making such a change.

It has been nice to read a book from the “third perspective.” John Price, a baptist pastor, has written a volume outlining his research as to why the congregation where he works has removed instruments of music. They had just one instrument, but, after careful study, he determined that one was just not needed and, in fact, violated the New Testament.

Old Light on New Worship reads somewhat like a master’s thesis, containing hundreds of quotes (chapter 2 alone has 261 footnotes). Price writes about the introduction of instruments in the Old Testament, but their absence from New Testament worship. He writes about the history of instrumental music, including scores of quotes from denominational leaders opposing their use.

While we often hear sermons about this subject, a preacher can only include so much information in 30-40 minutes of preaching. This book goes far deeper, as Price has obviously done much study and has spent much time in thought.

This book should be read by every Christian. It should especially be read by all elders. In a time when people are trying to change worship by adding such innovations, here is a clarion call to return to simple worship as outlined in the New Testament.
