Book Review: "Spiritual Patriots"

Aubrey Johnson has written his third book for the Gospel Advocate company. Elsewhere, we reviewed his excellent book on encouragement, The Barnabas Factor.

His newest book, Spiritual Patriots, deals with the short epistle of Jude. Often these extremely short books of the Bible are read, but not studied. Jude, though contains a lot of “meat” for the Bible student. Although brief, it is quite difficult. By way of example, read Jude sometime and just note how many references (either explicit or implicit) there are to the Old Testament.

Spiritual Patriots is subtitled “Jude’s Call to Arms,” and each chapter makes an analogy with the Christian life being a battle. Johnson does a great job keeping that focus throughout the book.

If you preach, you will find many good outlines and “quotable quotes” in this book. It is very obvious that Johnson thought this book through before writing it. It flows very well and covers each section well. In my opinion, the final (13th) chapter is the best. Johnson mentions how every letter tries to end “with a bang.” Jude does this as well, and brother Johnson does a masterful job ending this study “with a bang.”

The book is divided into 13 chapters, making it useful for Bible school, and each lesson ends with a series of discussion questions. The chapters simply follow the outline of the book of Jude.

I highly recommend this book. Although it is not a commentary, if you are studying the book of Jude, you will find yourself looking at this book for help. If you wish to order it from Freed-Hardeman’s bookstore, click here. The cost is $8.99.
