"Brokeback" Protest Information
The film “Brokeback Mountain” won another award last night, paving the way to a probably Oscar nod for “best picture” in March. The movie, about two cowboys who have a homosexual relationship over a period of about 20 years, won the Director’s Guild Award for “best picture.” The director, Ang Lee, also won for her direction of the film. Only five times in the 57-year history of this awards ceremony has a director who won at the Director’s Guild Awards failed to win at the Academy Awards. We will see in early March just how “tolerant” Hollywood really is. If this film wins “best picture” (which is far more than likely), it would surprise me if the actors and film workers in the crowd did NOT give the longest applause ever at the Oscars. (I just wonder how long they would have applauded if “The Passion of the Christ” would have won an award?)
For those who live in Northwest Alabama, there is an interesting conflict going on in Florence. The new theater behind Regency Square Mall (Regency Square Stadium 12) had said that they were not going to show “Brokeback Mountain.” Now, however, (probably due to its growing awards cache) they are caving in and saying they will show it, beginning next weekend. It’s time to respond and act! The manager of the theater said they were told to show the film by their corporate head, Carmike Cinemas. VOICE YOUR OPINION, and let them know that it’s not worth it to show this film. You will want to call them at 615-859-3369. One congregation has decided to take a stand. The Cox Boulevard church of Christ (Sheffield, Alabama) has asked every member to boycott the theater for six months if the movie is shown. You will also want to call Michelle Ogletree, who does the booking for the theater. Her number is 706-576-3400. You may also wish to write the manager of the theater. The address is Regency Square Cinema 12; 301 Cox Creek Parkway; Florence, AL 35630. (I want to thank Kris Burleson for sending me this information.)
IN OTHER NEWS…
It’s not often that we can congratulate politicians and judges from the state of New York. However, a New York appellate division court recently upheld the fact that marriage should be between a man and a woman in that state. Dave Miller wrote a report on the story for Apologetics Press, and you will want to read it by clicking here. Hopefully other judges and states will look to their example in this ruling.
