Book Review: "How We Got the Bible" by Neil Lightftoot
What a great book! I know most of you probably have this book in your library already, but this was my first time working my way through it. To say it was “faith-building” would be a great understatement. Our Senior High class asked me to teach a series in the Summer quarter on the Bible: how we got it, is it reliable, do we have the right 66 books, etc. After reading Lightfoot’s work, I know I am far more prepared to teach this material. In survey format, How We Got the Bible walks readers through the basic process of getting God’s Word from the writers many centuries ago to…

Another Good AP Article
In case you haven’t heard, evolutionists have “discovered” what they claim to be a stronger link between dinosaurs and birds. They have linked the T Rex and…the chicken! As always, Apologetics Press has written an excellent article about this topic. Please take a few moments and read Eric Lyons’ article by clicking here.

A Better Life
Last night, while visiting with the Sanders family in Doniphan, I saw my first episode of American Idol (I know, I’m a dork for not watching it before). One of the contestants said that he was going through the Idol process because he has two small children at home. He said that this was going to give his children a better life. I don’t know anything about this contestant, but the Sanders told me that he was just out of the Army and didn’t have a job yet. He is hoping to get a recording contract through American Idol for his job. Question: how would that make the life of…

Off to Missouri
Tomorrow morning, Lord willing, I will leave to speak in a series of Gospel Meetings at the Doniphan, Missouri, church of Christ. The congregation there has been doing much work preparing for the meeting. Flyers have been sent to all area congregations and about 2000 postcards have been sent to residents in the area inviting them to hear the Gospel. Our theme is, simply, “Practical Christianity.” We hope to explore various areas of study and understand how the Bible is still relevant to us today. If you can come to one of more of the services, please do. We will meet Sunday morning at 9:30 and 10:20, then Sunday evening…

Class All the Way
My sister, Amber Tatum, called me on the phone last evening to see if I had heard the verdict of the Mary Winkler case. When I told her that I had, she then asked if I had heard the response of Dan in the behalf of the family. I hadn’t, but now I have. If you have not yet heard (or seen) it, the statement it truly remarkable. Amber said that it was all class, and she (as usual) was right. Even those on News Channel 5 who were in the studio at the conclusion of the statement could not keep from saying how classy the Winkler family has been…

Voluntary Manslaughter
Mary Winkler was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter late this afternoon. The prosecution had wanted first-degree murder, but the jury settled on this lesser charge. She faces 3 to 6 years in prison. For an early press release on the story, click here. This part of the story now past, there are several things that need to be done. One is a lot of prayer. The Fourth Street church of Christ in Selmer, Tennessee, has been through so much because of this case. The Winkler family has faced barrage over the past 13 months, and especially in the courtroom over the past several days. The three precious children have been…

New CD Bible
Following up on the popularity of The Passion of the Christ, Thomas Nelson has announced it will release a 70-CD set of the Bible, as read by many famous people. The 20-CD set of the New Testament is set to be released late this year (as of now, around mid-October). The CDs will be more than just a straight reading. Hollywood celebrities will read parts (although someone to read Satan’s lines has yet to be found, even though the project’s head says that Satan “has the best lines”), and there will be sound effects such as the wind, storms and ships. It is set to be a truly dramatic set…

Update on Turkish Violence
Our last post visited the story of the killings at a Bible institute in Turkey (scroll down to read the post). We took some time to point out that authorities were worried that it might have been Islamic fundamentalists attacking the institute. Turns out, they were right. Click here to read a press release from about 7:00 Central time this morning. Note that they did this “for [their] religion.” As mentioned in the last post, true Islam is not a peaceful religion. Not all followers are violent, but, if they are not, then they are not really following what the Quran teaches. (Picture from AP, via the Voice of America…

Islamic Violence?
Assailants on Wednesday slit the throats of three employees of a publishing house that distributes Bibles, the latest in a series of attacks targeting Turkey’s small Christian minority. Thus began a story released today by the Associated Press. The next paragraph, though, is even more telling: The attack added to concerns in Europe about whether the predominantly Muslim country – which is bidding for EU membership – can protect its religious minorities. It also underlined concerns about rising Turkish nationalism and hostility toward non-Muslims. Stories such as this are quite frequent, despite the fact that Muslims claim their religion is one of peace. Brother Todd Clippard recently emailed five articles…

Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Upheld
Today, the Supreme Court handed down a 5-4 decision upholding the ban of partial-birth abortion. While this in no way will end the tragedy of abortions in this country, it is at least a step in the right direction. To read the Christian Science Monitor article about this decision, click here. May we continue to pray daily for our leaders to make the right decisions. May we continue to pray for those who are pregnant and thinking of aborting the baby. There are thousands of families who would love to have a baby and would be willing to adopt that precious little one. We are thankful every day that Mary…
