Hooray for Me…and You…….and a Dog Named Boo?
I know what Time magazine was trying to do, but I just do not understand why they went ahead with it. If you have not already heard, YOU are Time’s “Person of the Year.” That’s right. YOU are. And so am I. And so is some guy with a webcam in his basement recording himself playing “Life is a Rock” on the banjo. And so is this guy. You see, Time decided that, with the growth of YouTube, MySpace, Wikipedia and other “social network” sites, as well as the blogosphere, the “common man” has finally taken over the reigns of power in the world. I’m happy to have this blog,…

Voting Out…and In
St. Stephen’s Church in Virginia voted to leave the diocese it was in to join another one. This congregation is one of several considering the move, but, so far, just the third to make the move. Question: where in the Bible does it teach that a congregation can vote for such a thing? In fact, where does the Bible teach anything but autonomy of each congregation under the leadership of elders? Answer: Nowhere. Personally, I believe that, until people begin to come back to the Bible way of doing things, we will see more of this. Maybe there is a great chance of “restoration” evangelism as stories like these continue…

Chaotic? Could it be, Creation? Nah……
An “extensive study” of comet dust is causing evolutionary scientists to rethink how the universe began. To be an evolutionist, one must conform to the idea that things are uniform. In other words, minerals have been breaking down at the same speed for all time, and things have happened in an orderly fashion for all that time as well. If there were some chaotic event that shook the universe, or a major part of it (like a flood), that would go against the theory of evolution. Some comet dust has caused scientists to think that things have been chaotic in the “distant” past. If that is the case, then they…

No Surprise, but Still Tragic
For several years, the Richland Hills church of Christ in Texas has been the largest church of Christ in the world. With around 6400 members, Richland Hills is more than double the size of the next-largest congregation, Memorial Road in Edmond, Oklahoma. Sadly, though, the Richland Hills congregation has drifted further and further away from the truth. The minister, Rick Atchley, is a proponent of “getting back together” with the Christian Church, even if no changes are made in worship style or view of the Bible. Now, the latest. On December 3, it was announced that the congregation would be starting an instrumental worship assembly on Saturday nights. They are…

Thank You So Much
Today is December 12th, 2006. Exactly one year ago, we added a “counter” to the right-hand side of the blog. We wanted to see if anyone (besides us) ever came to the blog. When I got on this morning to check for comments (as if there are ever any of those), the counter read 4320. Over four thousand hits in one year. For a personal blog, we think that’s pretty good. As we have said before, we are so happy to do this. This is the 249th post in the history of the blog (about 18 months), so we average a new post about every 2 1/2 days. We hope…

Do They Really Want to Make This Jump?
Scientists uncovered another set of dinosaur fossils, and have made an amazing jump as to the age of the creature. They have also made another interesting statement in regard to plesiosaur. Yahoo! reports: In life, 70 million years ago, the five-foot-long animal would have resembled Nessie, the long-necked creature reported to inhabit Scotland’s Loch Ness. Did you catch that? The scientists are claiming that the creature resembles a creature that has never been proven to exist! Now, the sad part is that they must automatically jump back 70million years to make this creature fit their teetering theory. Why? Because scientists continue to want our existence to be true without God.…

A Good Guy "Wins"
I don’t know much about the personal life of Ladanian Tomlinson, but I like what I see on the field. Yesterday, LT scored 3 more touchdowns to break the single-season record for total touchdowns (scored by running or catching) with 29. He also has two passing TDs which do not count on his record. The record he broke was set last year by Shaun Alexander of the Seahawks, when he scored 28. Tomlinson has three more games to destroy the record. Besides the impressive numbers, though, is something far more important. In an age of over-the-top celebrations and players being more famous for their off-field antics, it’s good to see…

65 Years Later
Today in Hawai’i, about 500 survivors of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor will meet. The number of survivors continues to dwindle and many think this will be the last time there is a great meeting like this on a 5-year anniversary cycle. All the survivors are in their 80s or 90s. Please do two things. 1. Be thankful. These soldiers are heros of our nation. And deservedly so. Pearl Harbor was one of the most awful events in our nation’s history, but it had a great effect. Thousands “signed up” for the opportunity to go fight for our nation in Europe and the Pacific. I am proud that both…

Just Wondering When…
The first Muslim to serve in the United States Congress is already causing a controversy. Keith Ellison of Minnesota refused to use the Bible for his swearing in ceremony, choosing rather to use the Koran, the “holy book” of Islam. USA Today’s Andrea Stone wrote the following article about the controversy on Friday: The first Muslim elected to Congress hasn’t been sworn into office yet, but his act of allegiance has already been criticized by a conservative commentator. In a column posted Tuesday on the conservative website Townhall.com, Dennis Prager blasted Minnesota Democrat Keith Ellison’s decision to take the oath of office Jan. 4 with his hand on a Quran,…

An Humble Contribution
Those who can write well amaze me. I am blessed to be surrounded by people who can write things that are helpful, and can write in such a way that even I can understand. I am blessed to have a dad, Jim Faughn, who can make anything in the Bible practical to modern-day living through bulletin articles. My brother-in-law, Jeremiah Tatum, can say more in less space than anyone I know. Andy Kizer, the preacher here at 9th Avenue, can write about very difficult things so that anyone can understand them, and do so with a great level of scholarship. Drew Kizer’s blog continues to be a faith-building read for…
