Why Complicate Things?
We often remember very simple phrases. Some are very good and build us up, while others devastate us.
“I love you.”
“It’s a boy (or girl).”
“There’s someone else.”
“It’s cancer.”
“You got the job.”
“I made the team.”
“Welcome home.”
“We did all we could.”
What’s amazing is that, when you read those short phrase, some of them probably welled up emotions within you, though I didn’t even mention any names!
We remember these simple, complicated phrases because they express truth and emotion together in a powerful package.
If that’s true, why do we think we have to complicate things when it comes to evangelism?
While deeper study or conversations might have to happen over time, why would we complicate things on the front end? How about these simple phrases:
“Would you like to come to church with me?”
“God loves you.”
“I’d love to study the Bible with you.”
“Our youth group is having a devo. Wanna come?”
Seriously, how hard is that? Will we always get a “yes” from these? Of course not, but we often feel we have to be sophisticated and fancy when it comes to evangelism. In fact, it just takes simple words and questions.
Finally, may we also remember that Jesus our Lord won’t complicate anything in judgment.
“Well done.”
“Depart.”
If we want to hear the first of those, let’s stop complicating things, and just get about the business of loving people and inviting them.
Who will you speak to–in simple terms–today?
