That’s Not Debatable

Tonight, the first of the 2012 Presidential debates will occur, and Americans will be watching to learn from each of the two major candidates for that highest office. The debate–which will be held at the University of Denver–will not be a classical debate, of course, but will still help voters think about Barak Obama and Mitt Romney on certain issues and topics.

As usual, these debates will be highly scripted, with each candidate probably not saying much that we do not already know. Sometimes, however, we do get some memorable moments in these debates. Many of you remember John F. Kennedy basically winning the office because of his youthful appearance when compared to Richard Nixon in 1960. A younger generation remembers Al Gore, for all intents and purposes, “sighing” his way right out of the lead in 2000’s first debate.

While I am sure I could venture a guess as to some of the issues that the candidates will discuss in this series of debates, I want Christians to realize the balance that is necessary when watching these sorts of events. Some of what will be discussed will be very important. Some issues will have negligible impact on our lives.

But what will not be directly said at all tonight are things that simply are not debatable.

  • The words, “God is in control of the universe” will most likely not be uttered.
  • Phrases like, “Jesus is our only King” will not be used by either candidate.
  • “There is one body” and “worship in Spirit and in truth” will not be under discussion tonight.
  • The Bible’s power to change the souls of people will not be put forward by Mr. Lehrer to either candidate.

One reason these things will not be talked about is that they aren’t politically relevant (tragically). America, whether we want to admit it or not, does not care about these sorts of things in their politicians. (But that’s another article for another day.)

The other reason these things will not be put forward tonight is much larger. It is eternal. It is why I do what I do for my livelihood.

It’s because they are not up for debate.

Ever.

In any circumstance.

In any culture.

Period.

Absolute and holy truth are never up for debate, not even by Presidential candidates.
