Despite What Many Say…

There are many in our time who say that events such as Vacation Bible Schools, Gospel Meetings and youth rallies no longer are effective. They say that these types of events worked when members of our society had “nothing else to do.” Large crowds and scores of responses were commonplace. But that’s not the case anymore, they say.

Earlier this week, though, at least one of those events was held that proved that theory to be way off base. Congregations in Western Kentucky held and area-wide Gospel Meeting. Brother Allen Webster (preacher for the Jacksonville, Alabama, church of Christ and editor of House-to-House, Heart-to-Heart) presented lessons Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights. The meeting was held in the Carson Center, a large performing arts building in Paducah.

So, how “few” showed up to this meeting? On Sunday night 1403 were present. Monday saw a crowd of over 900 and Tuesday concluded the meeting with over 1100 in attendance.

Many say that Gospel meetings aren’t effective anymore. Just ask the hundreds who were encouraged in the rolling hills of Western Kentucky, the beautiful land of Southern Illinois and the flat fields of Southest Missouri this past week if they still work.

Let’s continue to put forth efforts that will effectively present the Gospel to as many as possible and that will encourage the saved to faithful living.
