Elton John: The Anti-Religion Guru

In an interview published Saturday, Elton John had a lot to say about the state of religion and homosexuals. Mr. John is an openly gay singer/songwriter with hits in at least four decades. While many like some of his songs, he, like other public figures, thinks that entitles him to share his “world-changing” views.

Here are some of the quotes from Sir Elton’s interview:

I think religion has always tried to turn hatred toward gay people.

From my point of view, I would ban religion completely. Organized religion doesn’t seem to work.

[Religion] turns people into really hateful lemmings and it’s not really compassionate.

While Elton John is free to have his own opinions about things, he really has said some things that cannot be backed up.

Religion, at least pure Christianity, does not turn hatred toward gay people. We are taught over and over to love all people, but we are also taught to hate the sin people [including ourselves] are involved in. Since homosexuality is a sin (Romans 1, et. al.), we need to hate the sin, but we always need to love all people, including sinners.

Also, Christianity does not turn people into “hateful lemmings.” While we need to follow the footsteps of Jesus, no religion promotes individual free thought more than Christianity. Where it has gone freedom has followed. In fact, if it were not for a Christian history on the British isle, Elton wouldn’t have the freedom to speak his mind in this interview.

While he may have some decent songs, Elton John has stepped over a line on this one. Maybe he should do some research with an open Bible and see a pure religion that promotes a pure lifestyle. Yes, he would have to change some things, but he would find that it is the greatest life anyone could ever live.
