Father, Help Us On The Uneven Journey of Life

Have you ever had one of those men in your congregation who could lead a prayer that just left you feeling so close to the Father’s throne? We had just such a man several years ago. When he led a prayer, I hung on every word. His deep voice resonated throughout the auditorium and brought such practical and spiritual thoughts to my mind. He took his time and carefully spoke every word of praise and request.

I was reminded of his prayers when one of his granddaughters was writing a reply recently to someone on Facebook. She reminded me that he always ended his prayers with, “In JESUS’S name, Amen.” His emphasis in life was on pleasing Jesus, so he emphasized the name of the one through whom we pray…every time he led a prayer.

The title of this post is another statement he always included in his prayers. It never seemed repetitious even though he always included it in every prayer. The way he said it made each of us being led in prayer know that it came straight from his heart.

He knew much about the uneven journey of life. Life hadn’t always been easy for him, but almost to his dying day–at 98 years of age–he kept a strict work ethic, a pleasant expression on his face, and a faith that was always on display to glorify God.

As we have traveled the uneven journey of life in 2020, many of us haven’t exhibited our faith in God. We’ve been fearful and uncertain. We’ve complained and whined about the situations surrounding us. We’ve questioned why we are having to go through such a difficult time.

In reality this isn’t the only time in history that such terrible events have taken place. There have been other pandemics with rising death totals. Politicians have fought as long as our country has been in existence. When we open our Bibles, we see the same kinds of behavior and the same kinds of travesty.

And yet, God is still in control of this world…whether we act like it or not.

Life is an uneven journey, but with God’s help we can remain faithful, peaceful, and hopeful.

Thank you, brother Richard Dykes, for your beautiful way of expressing thoughts to God on our behalf. Thank you, Father, that I was able to sit at his feet as he directed my thoughts in prayer. May I never forget.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Prov. 3:5-6).
