Feeling Forgotten?

Yesterday marked the 54th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary reaching the “top of the world.” On May 29th, 1953, he became the first man to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Today many people have completed the amazing climb, but, at the time this was a feat that many thought impossible. It is still looked at as a very important moment in the history of human achievements.

However, we often forget that he was not alone. He wasn’t the only man to reach the zenith of that highest mountain on that day. Why have we forgotten that Tenzing Norgay also reached the summit that day? He served as Hillary’s guide, but he also reached the top of the mountain.

Have you ever felt that way? Have you ever served as a helper for someone who accomplished something great and then didn’t get any of the limelight? How did it make you feel?

Those of you who serve as Bible class teachers probably know the feeling. Many others do such things as preparing the Lord’s table, getting PowerPoint slideshows together or sending a card of encouragement. Often these tasks go unnoticed by others; or they are not “important enough” to make the announcements.

You may feel unimportant, but you are an integral part of the work of the Lord!

I have often thought of Tenzing Norgay. Would Sir Hillary have made the summit of Mount Everest without him? I doubt it! Norgay was a vital link in the history of human achievement. If you serve others, you are vital as well.

Keep it up…you’re work won’t be forgotten by your Lord!
