Friday Links Roundup: Put Me In, Coach Edition
Tonight, the season (for me) begins again. Our church softball team played two games last Friday night, winning both. Incidentally, that’s ties the longest winning streak we’ve had in some time! I was not able to play, though, due to sickness. So, tonight, I’ll be out there, swinging and missing, committing errors, and generally not trying to get injured.
In honor of that moment, enjoy a little 80s flashback:
On to the links for this week:
1. Since we’ve talked about sports, what about those kids who show up at worship wearing soiled uniforms? Cindy Colley says (and I totally agree), they are more than welcome!
2. Leadership in the church is so important. Chris Gallagher shares a great list of “Five Must Needs in Congregational Leadership.”
3. Have you ever written a letter to Satan? Robbie Mackenzie recently did, and it is right on! Preachers, this would make good bulletin material.
4. If you are married, you probably say often that you want to “protect” your marriage. Through a powerful story, Richard Mansel shares some ways to do just that.
5. Ever tried to accomplish something that you just couldn’t do….until that moment? Daniel Howell uses that word picture in a good post called “Reaching for Heaven’s Doorframe.”
We hope you have a wonderful weekend. No matter where you are, make sure you remember the Lord on His Day.

I love that video. I enjoy trying to identify the players and the famous moments in baseball history. Do you know which outfielder Bill Mazeroski hit his home run over the head off to win the 1960 World Series?
The “brown-eyed handsome man” he sings about will always be Donna and my favorite baseball player – Josh Yancy
I had already read Cindy Colley’s blog post and it’s excellent. Too many kids (and parents) put sporting events and even practices ahead of attending worship services. We should commend the ones who put God first.

Stuart,
I can never tell from the video if the Left Fielder or Center Fielder is at the wall.
If it’s the Center Fielder, it was, of course, Micky Mantle.
If it was the LEFT Fielder, though, it was none other than Yogi Berra.
Stuart Yancy
Yogi Berra it was! It’s a trick question, a lot of people don’t realize that once Elston Howard started catching for the Yankees that Yogi Berra moved to left field.

You can see Berra’s number 8 and he turns helplessly to watch the ball fly over the wall…

Actually, Howard wasn’t catching in that game. Just to add to the trivia of it all, Johny Blanchard was the catcher for game 7 of that series.

As long as the Yankees got beat — that’s the most important thing. Sorry, Adam—I couldn’t help myself!!

Again, correct Adam. It’s good that you know the history of your team..
Tim Mullican
The internet is a wonderful thing.
Daniel Howell
Thanks for the link!
