What Makes You Hungry?
I’ll admit total ignorance of The Hunger Games, both the books and the first film, which was released just a few days ago. I have zero desire to read or watch, but the phenomenon of this series cannot be overlooked.
Some of you might think that I’m getting ready to “blast” these books or the movie, but I will not do that in his post, because I have not looked deeply into them. I could not speak to the moral or ethical nature of these things.
However, what I want to do ask one question: “What makes you hungry?”
As I have perused Facebook updates and Twitter feeds the last few days, the “hunger” for this movie has been clear. People have praised the film and promised to see it again. Some have encouraged people, saying that you “have to” see this movie.
During the same time frame, my hobby has been the NCAA tournament. I love this tournament, and now it is drawing to a close. Saturday will be the semi-finals, and Monday will have the title game. It has been a joy to see some games and to follow the other games online.
Also, Major League Baseball is about to start. (Actually, one regular season game was played early this morning in Japan. No, I didn’t get up at 5AM to watch it). Tons of people online have shown a hunger for the season to get underway.
And we could go on and on with book releases, new songs, box office releases, sports story lines, and so on. There can be no doubt that we hunger for these things.
There is nothing wrong with enjoying these things (so long as they are not promoting evil). We need a certain level of recreation in our lives, and it’s okay to have a hobby or to enjoy something that calms our minds down a bit.
But, back to our question: What is it that makes you hungry?
In other words, what is it that you must “must have” during the day or you will not feel fulfilled?
How about remembering the words of Christ, when He said, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied” (Matthew 5:6).
The excitement over The Hunger Games will subside, and some other movie will be your new favorite. Another season of your favorite sport will come and go. In a few weeks, you’ll have to think for a moment just to remember who won!
But the righteousness of God always satisfies, and does so fully. Get hungry for righteousness!

Lately, I have hungered to understand why people choose atheism. I am reading “I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist” by Frank Turek and Norm Geisler. I have also read recently, “Evolution…The Grand Experiment” by Dr. Carl Werner. Both are great books that are helping me delve deeper into this topic.
