Just for Today
Today’s article is once again inspired by listening to devotional songs as I was driving. Aside from the main point I would like to make, may I take a moment and suggest that taking the time to find, download, and create playlists of devotional songs is a fairly easy (and enjoyable) way to center your mind on God and His goodness in your life!
The words from our title today help me. I am one who often gets overwhelmed by all the things I “have” to get done. I just returned from a week at Horizons on the campus of Freed-Hardeman University. The theme of our week was “Still.” I can tell you that this is one teacher who needed lessons and motivation in that area as much or more than the campers.
One quote from the week that stomped on my toes and took root in my heart was: “Just because you are busy doesn’t mean you are a fruitful Christian.” Ouch! I try to make sure that I am busy doing good things to the glory of God (Phil. 2:10). But being busy, in and of itself, is not fulfilling that purpose.
In reality, I only have today to serve God. I may plan my whole summer, or even year, to be busy doing good works, but are they the works God has for me to do (Romans 12:6-8; 1 Corinthians 12 4-6, 11)? Please join me in considering both the lyrics from our “inspiration song” and the words from a command of God to make sure we aren’t just doing busy work, but that we are doing God’s work within His plan for our lives:
Father God, just for today, help me walk Your narrow way.
Help me stand when I might fall. Give me strength to hear Your call.
Psalm 46:10: “Be still and know that I am God.”
