Latest Book Reviews

Since the last book review, I’ve finished four books. Here is a short note about each of the four.

Marriage: From Surviving to Thriving
Charles R. Swindoll
W Publishing, 2006

Three of the books in this post are about marriage and family. I am counseling a young couple before their wedding, so I tried to read several volumes (and skim through some other material) to prepare.

Swindoll’s book is more for those who have been married for some time. Leah and I have agreed to go through it together after we finish one other book. I recommended to this young couple that they read through it together after one year of marriage.

As the title implies, this is a book designed to take a marriage to “the next level.” One of the great features of this book is that Swindoll ends by encouraging even those who have been married for many years to finish strong. It is a quick read that is highly practical and grounded in Scripture.

Marriage and the Christian Home
Dr. Ted Burleson
Riddle Creek Publishing, 2008

Brother Ted Burleson is well-known for his effectiveness in preaching about Christian marriage and Christian families. Now that material is available for many to read and enjoy.

The book is 13 chapters in length (standard for Riddle Creek), making it perfect for a classroom setting. The book also covers a lot of material in a brief format. There are sections dealing with cohabitation, parenting, divorce, and a host of other topics.

Leah and I used this book for our weekly devotionals, and found the material helpful for us. Brother Burleson constantly appeals to Scripture, bringing the reader back to God’s design for the home.

I would recommend the book for either a class setting or for a couple, either premarital or after the wedding day.

His Needs, Her Needs
Willard F. Harley, Jr.
Baker Books, 1994

I am not going to review this book here, because Leah and I are going to use it for our next set of devotionals. After finishing that, I will review with our thoughts.

Man O’ War: A Legend Like Lightning
Dorothy Ours
St. Martin’s Press, 2006

Okay, so this book doesn’t quite fit with the three books about family and marriage, but it served as my biography for May. Yes, I read the biography of a horse.

I wish horse racing were not tied up with gambling, because it is a beautiful sport and I love watching it. I had heard of Man O’ War for a long time, but this book brought his amazing racing ability to my mind.

The book was written as a biography, with many quotations and endnotes, but was still an easy read. “Red,” as the superhorse was called around the stables, was truly amazing, and I loved getting to know more about him.
