Lucy: The Sequel (Bulletin Article for October 29)
Scientists recently uncovered a new fossil set in Africa very near the same place where the famous “Lucy” fossil was found in 1974. In the evolutionary world, some are calling the bones of this little one “Lucy’s Baby.” They do not mean this literally, but, rather, they mean that these bones are about as old, and they are bones from a small child.
However, in describing these bones, scientists are continually saying that certain features are “like a chimpanzee,” “ape-like,” and other similar phrases. Some of you might recall that much of the same language was used by scientists in conjunction with Lucy.
It is sad, but many media outlets have taken this story and have put it forth as the “next big discovery” in the evolutionary scheme of things. The bones supposedly date back 3.3 million years, and are supposed to represent the best “missing link” between apes and humans yet.
I am not a scientist, but why do evolutionists keep calling these bones “ape-like,” but will not postulate that they might be of an ape? Is this how far down the evolutionary theory has come?
Science continues to find “old” things (bones, etc.), but then they immediately proclaim them to be hundreds of thousands or millions of years old, almost without studying them. Why? Because they know that their theory is teetering on the brink of extinction (sorry, couldn’t help myself). Many scientists have abandoned the theory of evolution altogether, or have, at least, begun searching for a new explanation.
As science continues to be able to look at the vast expanse of the universe and the microscopic, sub-atomic world all around us, design continues to show itself. The Psalmist wrote, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made,” and he was exactly right.
For years, Christians have simply said, “There is no way that anything this well-designed could be an accident.” Science is finding out more and more that Christians have been right.
The bones found in Africa may be somewhat old, but that does not mean they have to be 3.3 million years old! And, just because they share some common characteristics with apes and humans does not mean that they represent some missing link. It could simply mean that an Intelligent Designer used a design that works well in both.
So, why would people jump on a story like this one and want to believe it? It all goes back to one very simple fact: If there is no God, then man can decide for himself what is right and wrong. If, however, God exists, then I must follow His commands. That simply doesn’t appeal to many people.
There is a God, and He is the Intelligent Designer.
