Not Too Far Away (Bulletin Article for October 10)
I was in a mall a few days ago. I walked by a little area and had to turn around. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It was early October and the mall was already setting up for the picture area with Santa!
While I don’t get into Christmas until after the Thanksgiving holiday, this did cause me to think. Not about Christmas, but about our 2008 Youth Rally! Over the next few weeks, we will take this column to talk about things that are relevant to our youth rally. This week, we will simply have an overview of what to expect.
First, while it is called a “youth” rally, the weekend (January 4-5) is for all of us, young and not-so-young alike! Besides hearing fantastic lessons from our keynote speakers, brother Glenn Colley will be teaching a four-part adult class on that Saturday. Most of you are familiar with the good job brother Colley does.
Second, we will be studying a book that will help each of us. The theme for our rally is “The Christian Handbook: Studies in the Book of James.” Some of the articles in this column over the next few weeks will deal with James, but, for now, just remember how practical that book is. Each of us can benefit greatly from a study of this practical material.
Third, information is available to help invite those around you. If you visit our church’s website (www.9thavenuecofc.org) and click on “youth,” you will see a list of upcoming events at the top. In that list is our youth rally and a link where you can view the packet we will give out and mail out to other congregations. Print one out for yourself and use it to remind yourself, or to invite someone else.
Fourth, pray for this weekend. James tells us that the prayers of righteous people work! (cf. James 5:16). We are expecting a large number of visitors from many places, so pray for their safety. Pray for our speakers and teachers as they prepare. Pray that those in our community who need to hear the Truth will be persuaded to attend.
Fifth, make your plans to attend. Our high for attendance in the past has been 195. You can help us break that record by being here and inviting those around you to come. All members of the 9th Avenue family should want to learn more about the Bible and show support to our young people in this way.
Finally, there are many ways you can help. We will need to house dozens of guests. Food will need to be brought. This is a large event and we need a lot of help. Please be making plans to help us in any way you can. Thank you ahead of time!
It’ll be here before you know it!
