Yuletide Carols… (The Five Best Christmas Songs)

It’s just one week until Christmas, and I have been trying my best to enjoy the “build up” (at least, since Thanksgiving). That includes listening to a lot of Christmas music.

While I enjoy “Frosty” and “Rudolph” and the zillions of songs about Santa Claus, I truly enjoy more non-traditional songs. (I know that comes as a shock to my family.)

I know you have been sitting around your dinner table asking each other, “What are Adam’s favorite Christmas songs?” Well, here they are, in countdown order, of course:

#5: The Chipmunk Song: Christmas Don’t Be Late (by Alvin and the Chipmunks). What can I say, when you’re a tenor, it’s fun to hear guys who sing with voices that are higher than your own! Seriously, this is one of those songs that just makes Christmas fun.

#4: The Twelve Days of Christmas (the Muppets). Why is this song not in regular rotation during December? It’s a traditional song with a playful twist. Plus…John Denver! Ba-duh-duh-duh.

#3: Snoopy’s Christmas (by The Royal Guardsmen). I absolutely adore this song. It’s cute, but with a fairly significant thought behind it, while utilizing Snoopy and the Red Baron. It’s a brilliant piece of 60s music that too many stations are playing less and less each year.

#2: The Boar’s Head Carol (when sung by a men’s group). Okay, so we don’t sing this a lot in America, but it just sounds like an old-time Dickens’ Christmas-type song to me. And, in the tradition of my music, it is definitely non-traditional. Click here to listen to the best version of this song I’ve ever heard.

#1: Christmas Canon (by Trans-Siberian Orchestra). The standard in Christmas music. Beautiful, childlike, peaceful, simple. And, as an added bonus, there is also a rock version if you don’t like the kids’ voices.
