One Word Makes a Difference

As I was worshiping this last Sunday and listening to B.J. Clarke preach from 2 Corinthians, I thought about how one word in a passage of Scripture sometimes makes all the difference. In Paul’s opening remarks to the Corinthians, in the third verse of chapter one in this second letter the apostle writes, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort.” Concentrate on that word “all.” Paul did not say that God was the God of comfort. He said God is the God of all comfort. For me personally, that passage means so much more because of that one word.

Reading 2 Corinthians 1:3 caused me to stop and think for a while about what it means for God to be the source of all comfort. It shaped my entire understanding of how I might be truly consoled in a time of pain, disappointment, or grief. From there my mind wandered to a second consideration. If one word can make such a huge difference in one passage as I read God’s holy word…are there other places in the Bible that one word might make all the difference?

Yes.

“…For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace…” (Rom. 5:15).

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him…” (Heb. 11:6).

“You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.” (James 2:24).

“Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.” (Heb. 7:25).

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God…” (Deut. 29:29).

“But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.” (John 4:23).

“So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.” (Matt. 18:35).

“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins…” (Acts 2:38).

“Jesus answered, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.’” (John 3:5).

“He who believes and is baptized will be saved…” (Mark 16:16).

Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.” (Jude 1:21).

“This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” (John 15:12).
