Put It in Their Minds Early!

Not long ago, I heard a short snippet of a song that I had not heard in years. As I thought about it, I don’t think I had heard so much as a single note of the song in at least 20 years. But immediately, upon hearing those few seconds, I remembered a little more. Of course, I did a little online digging and found the full song. While I can’t tell you I remembered every word, it was remarkable how much of the song was still in my mind somewhere. And that was true despite the fact that the song had run up the charts and then quickly back down, so it wasn’t in regular airplay for all that long all those years ago.

Reflecting on that, it began to make me think about how amazing our minds are. Have you ever had the experience of hearing something in a sermon and it causes your mind to remember something that you heard in a teenage or children’s Bible class decades before? Our mind is able to hold tremendous amounts of information and it is a wonderful thing when we are reminded of something that has been in there for so long.

Which, of course, leads to the main point: get the Bible in the minds of your children early…and often!

There are a lot of families that put so many other things in the minds of their children (or insist that other things are there), but not Scripture. But the Bible verses and concepts and accounts that we teach them when they are young are what will matter most of all throughout life.

Sing Bible memory verse songs. Take them to Bible class…every time. Have family devotionals. Read children’s Bible story books. Watch good Biblical material online. Read Scripture to them.

Will they remember it all? No. But you will be amazed at how much is actually retained in those minds.

And, years later, they might just have the experience of something you taught them making a huge difference. They might remember what Scripture says about something when they are faced with a temptation. They might call to mind something you taught them when they are now teaching their own children. They might even use something you said in a Bible class or sermon when they are older.

But, above all, you are filling their minds with the very best thing possible. You are helping them know the standard by which they will one day be judged (John 12:48). And you are getting them closer to the Author of all things, their heavenly Father.

Get His Word in their precious minds and hearts early…and often.
