Q4Y: Prayer Lists

Since our first “Q4Y” (Question for You) post garnered such amazing response (3 comments!), I thought I’d ask a practical question in this one.

Leah and I both talk often about how we need to do better in our prayer life. Personally, I’ve observed that nearly every Christian says the same thing. When we are faithful to God, we desire to speak to Him and pray more deeply and fervently to Him.

I often try to make prayer lists, but I’m not good at keeping up with them. We pray for a lot of people, events, and other things, but we’re not good at having an organized way of keeping up with all the urgent and upcoming things we need to bring before God’s throne.

So, today, there are two Qs4Y:

1. What methods do you use to start your prayer list (notebook, computer program, index cards, etc.)?
2. How have you found is the best way to keep it updated as people and needs change?

Please comment. My family, and maybe others, will benefit as we try to do our best in prayer.

Great questions. I keep a list as a bookmark in my Bible for daily Bible readings. It can be updated with changes in our congregation’s announcements and serve as a daily reminder each time I open my Bible.

    Hi Adam

This is congregational, but one could use the same list personally.

We started about two months ago generating a prayer list and actually praying for every individual by name who is on the list. We say the prayer right before the sermon on Sunday morning and I say the prayer, anyone, of course, could do it.

We pass a clipboard around during my adult 10:00 class with last week’s list to be edited. Also, there is a blank sheet on the clipboard with three columns: Name, Condition, Connection (to the congregation). Sometimes we pass it around right before 11:00 service also since some come only for that service. This should give a current up-to-the-minute list. Then we pray for everyone on it.

Congregational response to this has been overwhelmingly positive. One person has even visited twice because (I think) he learned we were praying for him.

Your and your readers suggestions for ways to improve are solicited and appreciated.

    John

At our congregation, the secretary post major announcements on the church’s website. Also, facebook as been an encouraging way to edify and encourage each other.
