Ask the Readers: Bible Marking Tips
I know, I know… a preacher shouldn’t be asking this question. He should know how.
I also know that there is no one right answer to this question, but hearing from you will help others.
The question is: how do you “mark” in your Bible?
I have started doing more and more of this, but I have never really developed a system, so my notes are a mish-mash (at best), and I want to do two things: (1) continue marking in my Bible, and (2) have some type of orderly system.
In the comments, please leave any tips you have. They can be anything from the type of Bible you use to the type of pen or highlighter to the system you use. If you use an online system of electronic note-taking for your Bible, that’s fine, too. Tell us how.

I use the inductive method of Bible study so my Bible is full of different types of markings. I use Crayola colored pencils. During sermons, I underline phrases and verses that stand out to me. Sometimes when I go back and look, some of the markings make no sense at all but other times, the markings make certain truths jump off the page.

Leslie, I have been hearing a lot in recent months about the inductive system and the Bible that goes along with it. It’s good to know someone who uses that system. I’ve heard it is quite effective.

I have a Bible with large margins around the text. I use Bible highlighters (i’ve used various kinds, right now the brand I have is Zebrite.) I teach straight from my Bible if I am walking through a book. So my highlighting system is this.
I Highlight one thought in any color, then the next “point of interest” i use a different color. I don’t have a specific method for the colors, i just make sure i don’t do the same color multiple times in a row. The reason for that is when I am glancing at my text while teaching/preaching it is very easy for me to see where my next “point” is going to be.
around the edges I make my own commentary just about the points of interest that I have highlighted. I use pencil to do this (in case I mess up, I can do-over) Then once I have recorded my notes as I want them, I highlight my writings in Yellow. each Time i see yellow, I know that this is something I have wrote, also, highlighting over the pencil makes your writings not smudge and makes them last much longer.
There you have my wacky system.

Nothing wrong with that. At least you know what your system is. That’s my point of this “ask the readers” post…I don’t have a system, but want to get ideas for focusing more to have one. Thanks for sharing!

I highlight scriptures and make notes in the margins, then when I am teaching I use paper clips to get to my scriptures, then when the Bible wears out I have to start all over with the highlights and notes. I wish there was some way that I could transfer all of it easily, because by the time I get everything transferred the new one is worn out.
