Repeated Promises

Think back to when you were little and you were promised something that seemed so big to you: maybe it was an ice cream cone, maybe you got to watch a favorite TV show, or maybe even it was a birthday promise. I’m sure all of us have probably experienced the results of both outcomes: promises kept and promises broken. The odds are good that how you felt (and maybe still feel) about the people who kept promises versus the ones who didn’t were also vastly different.

As I have been teaching this quarter in the 3rd and 4th grade Wednesday night Bible class, we have been studying the life of Abraham and his descendants. Using the Apologetics Press curriculum, we have followed Abram from his original home in Ur up to Haran and down into and through the Promised Land of Canaan. While we have spent time looking at character traits of Abraham and his family members, one thing I noticed was the repetition of God’s promise to Abraham.

First in Genesis 12, when God calls Abram to leave, He states this promise. Again in chapter 13, when Abram and Lot part ways, God repeats part of His promise. Parts or the whole of the promise are repeated to Abraham in chapters 15, 17, 18, and 22. God continues to repeat His promise to Abraham’s descendants (Isaac in Gen. 26, Jacob in Gen. 28, etc.).

Anyone who takes the time to follow the story of the Bible knows that God kept all parts of His promise: Abraham’s name is still spoken of with respect today; a full nation (actually, two) came from his descendants; and through one of his descendants, Jesus, all nations are blessed.

Without this article becoming too lengthy, I want to offer the following suggestion: when God promises something, know that He will fulfill that promise. He has a perfect record and He isn’t afraid to repeat His promises over and over so that we will listen. With that in mind, consider the following to help you today:

“I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. … then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.” (2 Corinthians 6:16 & 18)

“…fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

“…for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’” (Hebrews 13:5b)
