Satan Tried to Ruin the Ladies’ Day
Recently I had the pleasure of speaking at a Ladies’ Seminar in Neosho Missouri. I was blessed to meet some wonderful sisters in Neosho and from the surrounding area. They had planned every detail of that Friday night/Saturday morning event and they were ready to show the great hospitality that I’m sure they show on a regular basis. The decorations were beautiful, the snacks they had prepared were wonderful, the lunch on Saturday was great, and the young ladies who led singing for the sessions and presented their Lads to Leaders/Leaderettes speeches did a fantastic job.
Now you may be wondering why I entitled this post “Satan Tried to Ruin the Ladies’ Day.” Let me explain by giving you a list of the obstacles he tried to put in our way:
- A terrible case of the flu which kept Jim from being able to go with me.
- Fear (on the part of several people) that I would also get the flu and be unable to come.
- Insecurity of traveling alone on a lengthy trip.
- The trip taking a little longer than I thought it would and having difficulty finding the motel which almost made me late for Friday night.
- The room they had reserved for me had been given to another woman with the last name of Vaughn (not Faughn).
- The gift the sweet ladies at Neosho had left at the motel for me was not in the room when I finally got a room.
- A water main had broken and the entire town of Neosho was under a boil water order.
- And to top it all off, it was rainy and windy.
Quite a list, isn’t it? It appeared as if anything that could go wrong would go wrong!
Satan is like that sometimes. He throws darts at us and tries to the best of his ability to discourage us by placing obstacles of every kind in our way (Eph. 6:16). You see, he wasn’t happy because I was going to be talking the entire weekend about “Living a Legacy of Faith.” So, if he could discourage us and make us give up, then that group of ladies would not have opened their Bibles and heard about the “heroes of faith” found in Hebrews 11. And they would not have studied on Saturday morning about how to “live your legacy” by looking at the characteristics of that virtuous woman in Proverbs 31.
Let me share with you how we handled, with God’s help, every one of those obstacles.
- Wonderful neighbors and church members took care of Jim’s needs while I was gone.
- Obviously, I did not get the flu. (I’m stubborn like that).
- Our wonderful church secretary went with me and drove every mile of the way there and back home.
- We were able to get
ready, and arrived at the building right on time. - The lady to whom they had given our room turned out to be there for the seminar and now I have new friends – not only
her, but her mother and two of her daughters. - They found the beautiful gift sitting on the bed of the room they were supposed to give me in the first place.
- The boil water order was still in
effect, but was a reminder to all of us that we are usually spoiled people, and bottled water tastes really good. - That rain and wind did not dampen our spirits and on Saturday the sun came out and warmed everything up.
On Saturday morning as I was speaking, the wind picked up and made the roof creak for a second. I looked at one of the ladies from Neosho and she mouthed to me “Satan.”
I smiled…because he did not win!!
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:10-11)
