Several Interesting Items

Time for another “weekend update.” Hopefully the following short items will interest you.

1. Spike TV is a network that has, since its inception, been increasingly vile. Their latest ad campaign, however, has to be their most sinful to date. The last line of the TV spot basically says that they are going to be punished forever, but, if they have the Spike network, it won’t be too bad. How truly sad it is that so many do not live in total fear of what hell is really going to be like.

2. Another sign of Hollywood’s obsession with being increasingly evil? When the Emmy nominations were announced, there were several shows (Grey’s Anatomy, The Sopranos, etc.) that were nominated for several awards that are consistently debase. However, one show was nominated for an Emmy and it got everyone’s attention. An episode of South Park entitled “Trapped in the Closet” garnered a nomination for Best Animated Program. This is the episode that sparked so much controversy about scientology by lampooning Tom Cruise and even South Park voice talent Isaac Hayes. Hayes quit over the episode (but, subsequently, resigned). Now making fun of a religion (albeit, a false religion) is Emmy-worthy?

3. Two more states upheld bans on gay marriage yesterday. Both Georgia and, yes, New York upheld their state’s respective constitutions yesterday by continuing to uphold marriage between a man and a woman. The New York times reported, “The majority decision, written by Judge Robert S. Smith…found that limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples could be based on rational social goals, primarily the protection and welfare of children.” So far, Massachusetts is the only state to openly allow same-sex marriages, although cases are still in the court systems of New Jersey and Washington. Many states have already upheld God’s plan for marriage. May we pray that the trend continues.

4. As if we needed another reason to tell young people to avoid alcohol–and ALL of us should be avoiding it, not just kids–we have gotten that reason with a recent study. Take the time to read the following short report from the Australian. Click here for the article, which discusses a dependance on alcohol that is more pronounced the younger a child starts drinking.

We hope you have a great weekend. If you are in the Haleyville area, come and worship with us Sunday! And, don’t forget the youth lectureship to be held at 9th Avenue on Thursday from 9 AM-6PM.
