Church Life

What Shape is Your Life?

Every part of our lives demands attention. From the most serious things to even frivolous things, we have different parts of our lives that demand our time, effort, and talents.

As Christians, though, we need to see our life in a more complete way. A Christian worldview demands it.

What I mean is that we should not be so quick (or even apt) to compartmentalize our lives. We talk that way too often, speaking of “my work life” and “my home life” and “my church life” and “my social life”…. and on and on.

Too many of us see our lives much like a post office lobby, with dozens or even hundreds of little doors, each one needing to be opened with a specific key or combination. When we are finished with one, we close that door and move to another one. When we leave work, we close our work door and open our shopping door or our home door or our entertainment door.

There is some wisdom in that, because we need to be sure we keep certain things separated. For example, I try (though I am not very good at it, honestly) to keep the stresses of ministry out of my time with my wife and children. They may suspect that daddy’s a bit stressed, but I do not want to bring that stuff before them.

What I want us to see, though, is that our lives need to be viewed with a different shape. Instead of pigeon-holing every aspect of our lives, we need to see our life more like an old-fashioned wagon wheel.

Why? Because then we must choose something to put at the center!

Christians need to choose Christ as that center hub, and then every other part of our lives will go where He directs. When I am at work, my decisions and attitudes will turn as Christ directs. When I am choosing how to entertain myself, I will choose based upon Christ’s directives. When I am choosing who to date or even marry, I will not remove that part of my life from the hub, because the wheel will no longer turn properly.

…and you could put any other part of your life, or any other decision on that wheel.

So, what shape is your life? Are you trying to be a post office and keep everything separate? If you are, then chances are that you are leaving Jesus in the Church building box.

Instead, shape your life like that wheel with Christ at the center, and He will always be there to help you in every area of life.
