“Simple” Blessings

Usually, I have my Tuesday posts pretty-well planned Monday, if not well before. Sometimes, I even type part of them ahead of time.

Today’s post, though, is being written today, and it’s based upon a couple of interesting things that have happened today. Nothing earth-shaking, but just interesting.

First, I went to a doctor for a check-up on my thumb. About 8 weeks ago now, I broke my left thumb in an auto accident. As I tell folks, it could have been a lot worse, and I’m thankful just to be alive and not seriously injured. Today, though, the doctor said all looks well, and told me to use the thumb as much as I could to help build up strength and flexibility. Talk about relief! It’s amazing how much I’ve missed using that one digit!

Then, as I was studying and writing on my Sunday night sermon, a knock came on the door. I answered and had a very pleasant conversation with a brother in Christ who attends another congregation, but was just seeking some information. What made this conversation interesting is that the man is deaf, and neither of us knew much sign language. (I know about 20-30 words, but they are very basic.) As he left, I found myself saying a silent prayer, thankful that I have my hearing. I had enjoyed conversations with my family this morning, as well as hearing the words of my doctor. I had listened to a couple of podcasts and some great music.

The old hymn states it very well: “Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.” I like the way James puts it far better. The brother of our Lord wrote,

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. (1:17)

I get far too caught up in the amazing, and I need to take more time to thank God for the “simple.” After all, He is the One who gives both.

Dear Lord,

Thank you for every blessing; even the ones that seem so simple. Your common blessings are more than I deserve, and I pray that you will forgive me for not being as grateful as I should be.

Each day, help me to see these simple blessings and help me to realize that You provide each one.

Above all, help me to never forget the blessing of forgiveness through Your Son.

In Him,

Amen
