Singing, We Teach… (Bulletin Article for October 22)
God’s people should be singing people. We are commanded to sing (Colossians 3:16; Ephesians 5:19; Hebrews 13:15), but that should not be the only reason we sing. God has done so much for us, and it should cause us to want to express our thanks and praise.
Sadly, though, many do not sing. As we praise God, many just sit and listen. While, sometimes, that could be because they do not know the song, most of the time it is not for that reason. Brother or sister, when you do not sing, you are missing out on so much. You are missing an opportunity to follow a wonderfully simple command of God.
You are also missing an opportunity to teach and encourage others. We all need to learn more, and we all need to be built up, and you have the opportunity to do that as we sing together. What can you teach your fellow Christians? You can teach…
1. That God exists. Our God, He Is Alive expresses this foundational truth that the world needs to hear.
2. That God loves them. “Oh, love of God, how rich and pure! How measureless and strong! It shall for evermore endure the saints’ and angels’ song.”
3. That we need a Savior. “Shackled by a heavy burden, ‘neath a load of grief and pain.”
4. That God provided a remedy for sin. “God sent His Son, they called Him Jesus. He came to love, heal and forgive.”
5. The message of the cross. The words of The Old Rugged Cross still need to be heard by so many.
6. That Jesus overcame death. “Up from the grave He arose with a mighty triumph o’er His foes.”
7. That we need to live faithfully each day. “I’m pressing on the upward way, new heights I’m gaining every day; Still praying as I onward bound, ‘Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.’”
8. That God cares when this world presses down on us. “Oh yes, He cares! I know He cares! His heart is touched with my grief.”
9. That we can all be together again in Heaven one day. “When we all get to heaven…we’ll sing and shout the victory.”
You could add to this list, but, when one does not sing, he or she is missing out on the opportunity to teach the entire Gospel message! Don’t miss that opportunity.
