Sometimes "Doomsdayers" are Correct

Whenever religious people try to thwart a certain movement or event, they are put down and treated as insensitive and crazy. One method that is often made fun of is what I sometimes call the “snowball” argument. It is the argument that states that if we let this certain sin become acceptable, what’s to stop another one from becoming acceptable. Those who use that argument are often called “doomsdayers,” “over-the-top” or, simply, “nuts.”

However, the decline of morality in our country shows that this line of thinking is true. And it continues. Did you realize that those who practice polygamy are trying to gain legal marriage rights? They claim that they have civil rights just like anyone else to be married.

In the state of Utah a case is coming through the courts that is trying to state that one man practicing polygamy named Mr. Cook is having his constitutional right to privacy and intimate expression violated by not being allowed to legally marry more than one woman.

Do these arguments sound familiar (and stale)? They are the same arguments that have been used for the past dozen or so months by those in favor of gay marriage. And those who have been made fun of as “doomsdayers” have been asking, “If we allow gay marriage, what will be the next step?” Those who are trumpeting polygamy as legal are even going so far as to say that it is the “next civil rights” arena.

If polygamy is allowed, then we must ask, where will it end? Gay/lesbian marriage? Can someone marry an animal? [By the way, a woman from England has already done this. She married a dolphin.] Where does it end?

The odd twist in all this is that many who are in favor of gay marriage are appalled that anyone would think of legalizing polygamy! Why would they be upset? One would think that this would be their greatest victory (if it passes).

Sometimes doomdayers are correct.

NOTE: There is a show on HBO called “Big Love” that deals with a family involved in polygamy. The show is attracting much attention. Is this the next area where Hollywood will try to change our views, as they did with “Brokeback Mountain,” “Will and Grace” and other entertainment choices promoting gays and lesbians?
