Sometimes, It’s Okay to Just…

This time of year, there are many reminders about gratitude. I think we all know that we need those reminders every so often, because it can become far too easy to slip into complacency and not be grateful.

One of those reminders that we often get is the song “Count Your Blessings.” I suppose that, for many people, this hymn is a favorite. I like it a lot, too, and it helps me to think about how much God has done for me.

And before going on to the gist of this article, let me say that counting your blessings is a wonderful habit. As the song states, “It will surprise you what the Lord has done.” Those “surprises” are helpful as we seek to praise and thank Him. So, by all means, count your blessings every once in awhile.

However, there are other times when it does not take counting. There are other times when it is okay to do something else. In fact, I would argue there are many times when, instead of counting, it is okay to do something else.

What is it?

Just say, “Thank you, God.”

Try it, and just see if your love and admiration for the Father does not increase each time. In the moment, instead of counting, just thank God for “this” or for “that.” Thank Him for just being there. Thank Him for loving you. Thank Him for this moment in time.

Don’t count. For once, just speak simple but heartfelt words to your heavenly Father.

“Thank you, God.”
