Summer “No” Vacation Series #4: Colton Smith: “Summer Plans”

Today’s post is the fourth and final one in our series written by college students. Each has done a great job in sharing with us how they are using their summer, not as a vacation, but as a way to serve God. As Joe and I pushed my gas emptied car down an off ramp of freeway 41, it dawned on me that our adventure was coming to an end.  For the past few months when I thought about my summer, there were only thoughts of the road trip.

You know, a special road trip. A beautiful adventure of finding your inner-being as you see changing landscapes from Nashville to Winslow to huge canyons and Vegas.

I suppose the beauty of the landscapes and Joe’s laptop playing the third disc of season two of the highly acclaimed TV show, “Lost “, kept me from realizing that our tank was empty and our trip was ending.

As I was pumping gas I really started thinking about my summer in this foreign place of Fresno, CA. The opportunity God has blessed me with to work at Woodward Park Church as a youth minister intern.

And now here I sit, typing away, in the midst of God’s plans for me. I am so thankful my inner-being finding road trip is over (sorry Joe)! The summer is such a great time for young adults in college to completely devote time and energy into the workings of the fruits of God’s spirit. Many of us will never have time like this again. This summer I am doing nothing but planning Bible classes, going on mission trips, conducting VBS’s, and making friends with kids in a place I would have never dreamed myself being in. I truly believe that with God, all things are possible.

Pushing cars and watching multiple seasons of “Lost” at a time are awesome, but it is so much better to be in the midst of God’s plans. It is so much more exciting to be abiding with God!
