The First Letter of Immodesty
Well, it’s immodesty season.
As the weather warms and schools let out, all you have to do is scroll social media if you want to see immodesty. People are taking off shirts, putting on thigh-high shorts, going out in bikinis, and not ashamed to spread it to the world. (And many parents don’t mind sharing these pictures of their own children with the entire internet, either.)
It’s sad.
But there is another layer that is even more tragic. If someone says something–maybe in a Bible class or small group setting–the comments are so telling:
- If they don’t want to see it, they shouldn’t look.
- I just want to be comfortable.
- It’s my body; I should be able to wear whatever I want.
- This is how I express myself.
Do you see a trend in those? Is it not fitting that the first letter of “immodesty” is “I.” It’s all about me.
Immodesty is a heart issue. It’s not a clothing issue.
I want to share my body with the world. I want people to see me. If someone has a problem with it, it couldn’t possibly be my fault at all.
I. Me. My. Mine.
That’s immodesty.
When you’re picking out clothes, your first thought should not be about “me.” It should be this question: “Does this glorify God?” A second question: “Does this reflect holiness?” A third question: “Would this show people how much I love Jesus?”
And, with that, the bikinis get thrown away. The shorts magically get longer. The shirts get put back on.
Why? Because our whole lives–including our clothing–are to be about Him…not “I.”
