The Message Remains the Same

An older gentleman in Canada was working on his property recently when he noticed something stuck in the mud by a lake. He decided to pick it up, since it was obviously just trash, but noticed something about the object.

It was a simple green bottle, but there was a sheet of paper inside. After opening the bottle, he read the note, which was written by a then-13-year-old girl who had vacationed on the other side of the lake and was simply putting a “message in a bottle” out there for the fun of it.

It was written 32 years ago, but the man read the note and actually found the now 45-year-old woman to talk about it! [Source]

A story like that one can make us smile, but it also makes me wonder: why can we believe that a random note in a bottle will not change over 3 decades, but some believe that the Almighty God of the universe cannot keep His message from changing throughout time?

In 2 Kings 22, we are told of the reign of Josiah and some of the restorations he made. Beginning in verse 8 of that chapter, we read about the high priest, Hilkiah, finding “the Book of the Law in the house of the Lord.” This discovery was told to Josiah, and the king desired for the scroll to be read. After hearing the reading, the king asked for some help in knowing what to do. He said,

Go, inquire of the Lord for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that has been found. For great is the wrath of the Lord that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us.

(2 Kings 22:13-14)

Why was Josiah so concerned? After all, a tremendous amount of time had passed–measured in centuries–since the law had been given to Moses, and a very long time had transpired since it had been written on this scroll that was found. Didn’t that time and the shifting sands of culture change the law of God and the meaning for people’s lives by the days of Josiah?

Not one bit.

And, today, though centuries have passed since God’s Word was written by inspired authors, the message remains the same. Cultures may change and moral systems may come and go, but the written standard of God has never changed a single bit. What was right when the pens of inspiration were set down is still right, and what was wrong then is wrong now. God’s love nor His wrath have waxed or waned in the least. Heaven and hell are still the only destinies of each soul.

That being true, don’t you think it’s time we made sure we have not lost the book of God, and don’t you think it’s time we made sure we are following it will full and wholehearted devotion?

“The word of the Lord remains forever.” (1 Peter 1:25)
