The Power of an Idea
Tonight, Leah and I are going to the Mount Juliet church of Christ for a very special evening. Dave Ramsey is leading the Town Hall for Hope from Oklahoma City. The event is being shown all over America.
The Town Hall for Hope is designed to provide hope in the midst of this economic distress. Ramsey promises to provide some history, some theology, and some practicality during his 30-minute address. Following the speech, there will be a one-hour question and answer session. Questions are being submitted by studio audience members, email, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.
Here is the official promotional video for the evening (very much worth watching!).
While I’m very excited about the event, it’s the “history” of it that is totally amazing.
Over 6000 churches, civic groups and universities are showing the webcast tonight. Fox Business Network is showing the entire 90 minutes commercial free. Nearly every radio station that broadcasts Ramsey’s radio show is doing the same. Among the 6000+ locations, over 1.3million people are already registered, and more are coming. Seating in all the locations is over 2million! It will be one of the largest webcasts in history.
Here’s the amazing part: The Town Hall for Hope was nothing more than an idea just seven weeks ago! Between Ramsey’s radio program and social network sites like Twitter and Facebook, this even has exploded and become a sensation.
This shows us the power of an idea. Yes, it had to be thought through. Yes, there has been a tremendous amount of work done so far. Yes, Ramsey is already famous in his own right. But the exponential growth of The Town Hall for Hope is proof of the power of an idea.
It is also proof of how ideas can spread quickly.
This should provide Christians with another kind of hope, and a kind of hope that is far more important than economics!
We live in a time where social networking has made contacting people a breeze. Twitter, Facebook, and other sites have nearly surpassed email as a way to reach people in a personal way, while doing so quickly.
What’s my point? Christians have the greatest “idea” in history! It is far greater than reversing our economy. It is greater than any political stance. It is the one “idea” that can save the souls of men.
It is more than an idea: it is the fact that Jesus Christ died and rose again to save us from sin. Why not “tweet” that? Why not “Facebook” that? Why not “email” that?
Why not share that face-to-face?
It provides everyone with real, eternal hope.

Special note: I hope to take some pictures tonight and post them here, on Twitter, and on Facebook if I have the right signal to do so. This is historic, and I’m excited to simply be in attendance for the evening.

You make some great points about how quickly the message can be spread!
The wife and I will be at Highland Oaks CofC in Dallas tonight for the broadcast. I am also going to attempt some Twitpics.
