"There's Nothing to Buy!" (originally published September 22)

With summer winding down, the weather is starting to get comfortable again. We are still experiencing hot weather in the evenings, though. And, with that warm weather, clothing—or lack of it—remains an issue. Many Christians continue to wear shorts that are much too short, shirts that are low-cut or that show the midriff, and skirts and pants that are far too tight.

Talking with parents, one complaint seems to be the lack of product on the market that would qualify as “modest.” Many parents come back from shopping trips and act defeated. They often say, “There’s nothing modest out there. There is nothing to buy!”

Having looked at shopping malls and other stores, I must admit that it seems as if those who favor immodesty—which would, sadly, include many Christians (even here at 9th Avenue)—have won the fashion wars. However, there are some who are not going to give up the fight.

If you have internet access, there are two websites to visit. These two online stores feature cool, fashionable clothing for girls and ladies that is modest. The prices are reasonable as well. These two sites are www.modestapparelusa.com and www.modestbydesign.com. Both of these companies have websites that are easy to navigate. Modest Apparel USA stresses clothing for girls and ladies for school, work and play. Modest by Design features more “dressy” clothing, such as formals. The motto of Modest by Design is “clothing your father would approve.”

Sounds almost Biblical, doesn’t it? We need to make sure that, when we go out, we are wearing clothing our Father would approve of! It is tragic that many Christians seem not to care about modesty anymore. They are forfeiting their souls just to fit in with the crowd. A little more shopping combined with a greater sense of God’s presence will help them realize that God wants his men and women not to make their bodies the focus. Instead, let’s dress in such a way that God is the focus!
