Thursday Hymn Reflection: “The Battle Belongs to the Lord”
[Each Thursday, we reflect on a hymn suggested by our readers. To add yours to our list, please leave a comment with up to 3 songs. BY THE WAY, we have less than 20 left in our list, so we need to “build up” our suggestions again.]
Today’s hymn is quite unique. For starters, the song changes back and forth from major to minor. Also, part of the song is sung in unison, while part of the song is in “regular” four-part harmony. Also, it is a fairly new song (written in 1984), but is popular with both young people and many adults.
While the music is interesting, we never need to let that keep us from seeing the real power of this song. The words of “The Battle Belongs to the Lord” are impressive and are filled with statements of bold faith.
The song, written by Jamie Owens-Collins, contains two major themes that Christians need to think about often.
- First, the song speaks of unity. “No weapon that’s fashioned against US will stand,” and “Take courage, my friend, your redemption is near” are two great lines that speak to this. Christians are not fighting alone. We need to always be there to encourage each other to stand together in the fight, because it truly is a battle.
- But, more importantly in this song, we are focused on letting God take control. Those who follow Christ need to always be reminded that we are not only fighting for right, but that God fights on our side with us! Often in the Old Testament, His people were told that He would go to battle with them, and even before them. The same is true in our spiritual battle. God is with us, but He also has already won the victory! If that doesn’t inspire us in the battle, I don’t know what will.
While the song is filled with that imagery, I think it’s the chorus that gives the song its power. As we reflect on what God does for His children, the song bursts forth in praise: “And we sing glory, honor, power and strength to the Lord.” Any time we think about God, praise should be on our lips.

Enjoy this recording (although the video not of the best quality, the audio is good) of the song as sung by the Florida State College Choir.
