Two Financial Books to Help Christians

Growing up, I was fascinated by money. In fact, in my late high school years I thought I would end up being a stock broker. Thankfully, I am not. I love my job, but, like so many other Americans, I have had some financial hurdles to jump.

Many times Christians are extremely embarrassed by financial difficulties. They know they should be giving generously to honor God and aid their local congregation in her endeavors, but they simply cannot. They are swamped by a mountain of debt that seems to never end. Car notes, mortgages, student loans, credit cards and other debts continue to mount, as does their guilt.

Finally, (hopefully) they say, “I’ve Had It!” They want to get out of debt, but they are not sure how to do it. And, once they have eliminated their debts, what then? How does a Christian deal with excess money? Sadly, we all know those who were faithful until they got a taste of this world’s goods.

I enjoy reading books and articles written by financial guides with a “Christian” perspective. Recently I read two different books that will help anyone who is having financial trouble.

The first is No Debt, No Sweat! by Steve Diggs. Mr. Diggs is a member of the Church of Christ in the Nashville area. The book is a little more detailed than the other to be discussed in a moment, and it has a few more practical suggestions. The best part of the book are the chapters on how to save money in your monthly budget.

One of the drawbacks of this book is that the author suggests that we should tithe. He does acknowledge that tithing, as such, is not a command, but then he backs off his statement by saying that it is the easiest way to teach children about money.

Overall, though, the book is greatly helpful.

The other book is not written by a member of the Lord’s Church, but Dave Ramsey is a member of a denomination. He still writes from a “Christian” perspective. It is not surprising to see him encourage tithing. His bestselling book, The Total Money Makeover, is as straightforward as it is. On his radio program, Mr. Ramsey often kids about making money by telling people common sense. This book is filled with common sense, but it will reinforce some great Biblical principles in your mind as well.

If you are struggling with finances or just want some good helps to study this great subject, may I recommend each of these books.
