What Really Matters
As we go through all these stay-at-home orders and have our scheduled disrupted so much, one thing that people are regularly talking about is how it is reminding them of what is really important. Difficulties and tragedies often do that.
Take the example of a family in Chattanooga, Tennessee whose house was struck by a recent tornado. As is often the case, things were devastated and scattered. When you seem to have lost all your material things, what do you want back?
It certainly was not a dresser that was in the house, although I am sure it would be nice to have a larger piece of furniture like that back. Instead, though, it was one specific item from inside that dresser, which was carried away by the storm’s powerful winds.
Inside that dresser was a quilt, and on that quilt were patches from the now-deceased husband’s tours of duty in the Middle East and other items reminding the family of him. Last Thursday, thankfully, the quilt was found and, due to social media, was returned to the woman who lost her husband 10 years ago. [Source]
A lot of people right now are being reminded that family really matters. When they can go to the nursing home, but have to “visit” through a window, it brings that to mind. When family from out of state cannot visit at all, it brings that to mind. When you are actually “having” to have long conversations, it brings that to mind.
As we start seeing things open back up, our schedules will start to fill back up with outings and more regular work hours. We will start going and going again, filling our evenings and weekends will all sorts of stuff. And that’s fine…to a degree.
But will we so fill our time that we lose sight of what we are being reminded of, that family–and real time with family–matters?
Or will it take a quilt lost in a storm to remind you of that?
