What Verse Are You On?

If I understand correctly, this will be the final post written by one of the “Legacy Ladies” for 2019. With that in mind, I want to share a brief thought for you to consider as you finish your 2019.

A month or two ago, we sang the hymn “None of Self and All of Thee.” Later that morning in Bible class the discussion led to where my brain had already gone: if I am honest with myself, what verse of that song best represents where I am spiritually? I would love to claim verse 4 which aligns with the title of the song. I don’t think I’m stuck at verse 1 where the sentiment is exactly backward: all of self and none of Thee.

In my heart of hearts, I know that I fluctuate between verses 2 and 3. On the good days, I am able to say “less of self and more of Thee.” However, there are days when I would have to admit that it is only some of both. That is a sobering thought!

And then I realized, I’m looking at the wrong part of the song! I am still focused on me. I do believe self-reflection is good and even necessary for improvement. But go back to the song and look at the elements that cause the changes:

  • Verse 1 – there is no change agent. The focus is on my pride.
  • Verse 2 – the reality of Jesus on the cross.
  • Verse 3 – His tender mercy.
  • Verse 4 – Lord, Thy love at last has conquered!

Friends, consider where you are in your progression through life and then look to the only One who can cause and sustain changes that impact eternity!  “He must increase, but I must decrease.” John 3:30

Oh, the bitter pain and sorrow
That a time could ever be,
When I proudly said to Jesus,
“All of self, and none of Thee.”
All of self, and none of Thee,
All of self, and none of Thee,
When I proudly said to Jesus,
“All of self, and none of Thee.”

Yet He found me; I beheld Him
Bleeding on th’ accursed tree,
And my wistful heart said faintly,
“Some of self, and some of Thee.”
Some of self, and some of Thee,
Some of self, and some of Thee,
And my wistful heart said faintly,
“Some of self, and some of Thee.”

Day by day His tender mercy,
Healing, helping, full and free,
Brought me lower while I whispered,
“Less of self, and more of Thee.”
Less of self, and more of Thee,
Less of self, and more or Thee,
Brought me lower while I whispered,
“Less of self, and more of Thee.”

Higher than the highest heaven,
Deeper than the deepest sea,
Lord, Thy love at last has conquered:
“None of self, and all of Thee.”
None of self, and all of Thee,
None of self, and all of Thee,
Lord, Thy love at last has conquered:
“None of self, and all of Thee.”
