What We're Fighting
They were leaving a high school football game, and not even a varsity game. It was the middle of the evening (about 7:00) and still daylight. The two girls were talking when a cell phone rang. One of the girls answered and, upon realizing it was a friend, put the call on speakerphone. Within just a few moments, the conversation turned to news about a friend. With the phone on speaker, it wasn’t hard for those walking near the girls, who were about 13 or 14, to hear the conversation.
One girl asked, “They made out?” And, after a muddled response, the other asked, “You mean he slept with her?”
Why do I tell you this story? It shows us the culture our Christian young people are fighting, and it shows us the young people we are trying to reach. These two girls, again, about 13 or 14 years old, were speaking openly–with others around–about the sexual exploits of a friend.
So, where did this conversation happen? New York? Miami? Chicago?
I was the one walking to my car behind the two girls who overheard the conversation. They were talking after a 7th and 8th grade football game at Haleyville High School. Yes, these things happen in smalltown U.S.A.
Pray for our young people, that they may be able to stand tall in the face of such.
