Where No One Is Alone

[Editor’s Note: The lady mentioned in this article lost her battle with cancer since the article was written. We held the article back from publication for some time and we pray this is seen as an appropriate time to share it. We continue to pray for her family.]

As I type these words, a sister in the Lord is fighting cancer. There are many things which the two of us do not have in common. She is much younger than I am and has a two-year-old child, while my youngest grandchild is about to celebrate her thirteenth birthday. The pigmentation of our skin is quite different. We do not share the same family background, nor did we grow up in the same community.

What we do have in common is our relationship with Jesus. While she worships in a different congregation in our community, her mother and two of her brothers worship where I worship. In fact, one of the brothers is one of our preachers. The fact that we worship in two different buildings does not keep us from being united in our beliefs and practices. Both the congregation where she worships and the congregation where I worship and serve as an elder are seeking to unite all who desire to follow Jesus by a continued effort to restore Christianity as it was practiced in the first century.

All of that made me do some serious thinking when I saw this picture on social media recently:

What I have been thinking about has to do with the people in the picture. It is not a picture of my sister in Christ and the people with whom she worships. It is a picture of her and those with whom she works.

The picture and my thoughts concerning it have challenged me. They have caused me to think about how well I (and maybe others) demonstrate concern and support for fellow Christians. Please notice that the word I used was demonstrate, not express.

Most of us are probably familiar with the song, “Where No One Stands Alone.” Maybe somebody should also write a song that could comfort and challenge all of us. Maybe the title should be “Where No One Fights Alone.”

Better yet, how about all of us trying to make sure that nobody is ever made to feel like they are all alone as they deal with the struggles of life? Wouldn’t it be great if all of us lived in an environment and had the kind of relationships with each other that caused us to know that there is a place where the following is true?
